Method 2
The reference(s) that appear on the screen resulting from a search are sometimes ambiguous and/or difficult to interpret.
A single item appearing on the screen is often a range of pages including much more material than desired. But upon clicking on that single item the reference sought will be given on the screen with the specific search words outlined in red. But to obtain the source—be it Letters or other source material—it will require a back-up to the last appearing code. The following points may be of some additional help.
The words Collected Writings are written out with the following code used:
01013E:1>206, where
01...34 = vol.# (1 thru vol.34)
13E = article # in volume 1
>206 = page # in vol. 1
The words Notes and Jottings are written out with the following code used:
40001E>1, where
40 = vol.# (1 thru vol.5 in one)
1E = article # in volume
>1 = page # in specified volume
The words Notes and Comments are written out with the following code used:
41001E>1, where
41...47 = vol.# (1 thru vol.7)
1E = article # in volume
>1 = page # in specified volume
The code used for the Letters is very confusing. The numbers 51, 52, 53 are used to designate vols.1-3, respectively. The following code is used:
51109E>p210, where
51...53 = vol.# (1 thru vol. 3)
109E = letter # in specified volume
>p210 = page # in specified volume
The code used for the Synopsis is the most confusing and difficult to interpret of all the various sections of the writings. For instance, the Bible book Proverbs, or even Luke, may be used instead of the word Synopsis. Therefore, the following may be of some help in interpreting the code used:
61011F:1>7, where
61= the uniform first two #s used for all five vols. of the Synopsis
11F = the book of the Bible designation, eg, Genesis
Note: each successive book number is increased by 10, so that the next book, Exodus, is 11+10, or 21.
F:1 = the paragraph number (but not always, because extra paragraphs are sometimes added)
>7 = the page number
Summary of the Synopsis is as follows:
The first two numbers in the code are as follows:
Example 1:
Let's search for the expression "Be to their faults a little blind and to their virtues ever kind." The words "virtues ever kind" will be searched as follows: virtues /2/ kind. The search response appears on the screen as: <52157E>p252 Dear F Cavenagh, -I was ver 2 Hits The first two numbers — 52 — indicate that the source book is Letters vol. 2, but no more. The next step is to double click on the code appearing on the screen, and then the actual desired passage appears red highlighted, but with no reference information. The next step is to back up the screen until the first previous code on the left hand margin appears, which will be as follows: <52217E>p344. This code means that the search criteria, virtues /2/ kind, is in Letters vol. 2, and the letter containing the searched expression starts on page 344, and is in the 217th letter in vol. 2. The best guesstimate of the page that the expression is on is that it is probably p 344+1—the previous code number—or p 346-1, the next code number after the highlighted searched expression. In this particular example the variance between the two codes is short, and therefore the accuracy of the guesstimate is high. In another possible scenario the variance of page estimate may be as much as two pages off.
Example 2:
To find quickly a book of the Bible discussed in the Synopsis use the following approach:
<61(code of the book)F> ,
but be sure for a book like Ruth with only 2 numbers — 81 — use a 0 before the two numbers, 081. Thus, Ruth would be <61081F>, and NOT merely <6181F> .
