Versions of James MacKnight and Alexander Campbell Compared, Ephesians chap. 5

James Macknight, 1795

Alexander Campbell's 4th edition, 1835

BE ye, therefore, imitators of God, as children beloved; 2 and walk in love, even as Christ loved us, and gave himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savour. 3 But whoredom, and all uncleanness, and covetousness, let them not even be named among you, as it becometh saints. 4 Also obscenity, and foolish talking, and double meanings, are things not proper; but thanksgiving rather is proper. 5 For this ye know, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with false speeches; for on account of these things the wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience. 7 Wherefore, be not joint partakers with them. 8 For ye were formerly darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord; walk as children of light. 9 Now, the fruit of the Spirit consists in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth. 10 Approve what is well-pleasing to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them. 12 For the things which are secretly done by them, it is base even to mention. 13 Now all things to be reproved are made manifest by the light; and every thing which maketh manifest is light. 14 Wherefore, it saith, Awake thou who sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon thee. 15 See then that ye walk accurately, not as unwise, but as wise men: 16 gaining time, because the days are evil. 17 For this, do not become madmen: but understand ye what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine by which cometh dissoluteness; but be ye filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. 20 Give thanks at all times for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father. 21 Be subject to one another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; because he is the Saviour of the body. 24 Therefore, as the church is subject to Christ, so also let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your own wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for her; 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her with a bath of water, and with the word; 27 that he might present her to himself, glorious, a church not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that she might be holy, and without blemish. 28 So ought husbands to love their own wives, as their own bodies: he who loveth his own wife, loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as even the Lord the church: 30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be glued to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ, and concerning the church. 33 Therefore, also, let every one of you in particular, so love his own wife as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Be, therefore, imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, even as Christ has loved us, and has given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savor. But whoredom and all uncleanness, and inordinate desire, let them not even be named among you; (as it becomes saints;) nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor double meanings, nor things uncomely; but rather thanksgiving. For this you know, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor lascivious man, who is an idolator, has inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. Let no one deceive you with vain speeches; for on account of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. Be not, therefore, participants with them. For you were formerly darkness; but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light. (Now, the fruit of light consists in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth.) Approve what is well pleasing to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them. For the things which are secretly done by them, it is base even to mention. But all these reprehensible things are made manifest by the light; for whatever makes manifest, is light. Wherefore, it says, Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. See, then, that you walk accurately: not as fools, but as wise men; redeeming time, because the days are evil. Therefore be not simpletons, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, by which comes dissoluteness; but be filled with the Spirit: speaking to one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord: giving thanks at all times for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father. Be subject to one another, in the fear of God. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, even as Christ is head of the congregation; he is the saviour of the body. Therefore, as the congregation is subject to Christ; so, also, let the wives be to their own husbands, in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the congregation, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it with a bath of water, by the word. That he might present it to himself glorious, a congregation not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it might be holy, and without blemish. So ought husbands to love their own wives, as their own bodies: he who loves his own wife, loves himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord the congregation: because we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall adhere to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery; but I speak concerning Christ and the congregation. Therefore, also, let every one of you in particular, so love his own wife as himself; and let the wife reverence her husband.
